Chevy’s New Racer Set to Invade IMSA & Pirelli World Challenge Next Month

When Ford revealed that it was building a Mustang GT4 back in November, we knew it was only a matter of time before Chevy responded. And it’s done just that, in a big way. Team Chevy introduced their GT4 racing gem, the Camaro GT4.R, to the world via Facebook. And even though we only get a rendering of the car and a short teaser video, it’s enough to get Chevy fans everywhere riled up.

GT Racing is on fire at the moment. In addition to Ford and Chevy, we’ve got new cars from Porsche and McLaren, with Mercedes and BMW racers in the works as well. Next month, Chevy intends to race the GT4.R in the IMSA Continental Tire SportsCar Challenge, as well as the Pirelli World Challenge. This, in addition to various other unnamed GT4 races around the world.

Chevy developed the race ready Camaro, based on the road going ZL1 platform, with the help of Pratt & Miller Engineering. The heart of the beast is a dry sump 6.2L LT1, with an Xtrac sequential six speed transmission behind it. Traction control is adjustable, and the car features other goodies like adjustable dampers and Brembo brakes with adjustable ABS.

A lot of time was spent in the wind tunnel perfecting the aerodynamics of the stock Camaro shape. A new rear wing is used to generate prodigious downforce. It’s joined by a front splitter with diveplanes that promise to keep the GT4.R glued to the ground.

With its addition to an already-exciting field, GT4 racing is shaping up to be must-watch TV in 2018.
