One of the main reasons why you might want a diesel engine in a half-ton or mid-size pickup truck is for an increase in fuel economy. Sure, the extra torque is great, but these trucks are often used as the family vehicle, and it’s nice to know that you are eeking out a fuel extra miles per tank. The dominating force in diesel half-tons and smaller is Ram Trucks, with their 29 miles-per-gallon EcoDiesel. However, that all changes today.

That’s right, we now know official fuel economy numbers for the Chevrolet Colorado (and GMC Canyon) with the Duramax 2.8L diesel engine. With a two-wheel drive configuration, it gets 31 miles per gallon on the highway, which bests the Ram Trucks EcoDiesel by 2 mpg in similar configuration.

The four-wheel drive version, which’ll probably be the more-common configuration, is rated at 29 miles per gallon on the highway.

Is the improved fuel economy worth the extra $3,730 over the cost of the V6 petrol version? That you’ll have to decide for yourself depending on how you plan on using the truck. But, in the meantime, we have a new fuel economy king on the block, and it’s from General Motors.
