Chevy Bites Back: Camaro Outsells Mustang in September

Now here’s some news for the Chevy die-hards and Mustang haters: last September, for the first time in two years, the Camaro outsold the Mustang. In fact, the sales of the Mustang have slumped so badly, Ford has decided to idle their plant in Flat-Rock Michigan for two-weeks. Ouch.

According to Bloomberg, a big part of this sudden burst of Camaro enthusiasm has to do with incentives. 2016 models have been selling with a discount of roughly $3400 compared to the Mustang’s average of $2600. Car sales in general are weakening, so this flurry of activity before the 2017 Camaro hits showroom floors should be expected.

Still, it’s hard to believe that Camaro owners are buying more just because the Mustang is more expensive. This year Chevy also introduced an extremely peppy turbo-four cylinder to the line-up this year to beef up the base model. At it’s lightest, the current gen car weighs about 3300 lbs making it the lightest pony car available and the most fuel efficient. Methinks that killer combo of efficiency, power and price has something to do with it.

They’re still playing catch-up overall. Although Chevy has sold nearly 55,000 Camaros this year in the US, Ford has moved more than 87,000.
