Sometimes I get asked, “What options should I get with my new car? Do I need [insert random feature]?” A lot of times, that comes down to what you’re using the vehicle for, how long you plan on keeping the vehicle, and other factors. But if you’re looking at a Chevrolet with an option for “Magnetic Ride Control,” it’s an option box you should check.

Not many Chevrolets offer it; the Camaro SS, the Corvette, the SS, but that’s about it. However, it’s a magical suspension component that can turn any car into an all-round car. For example, the 2016 Chevrolet Camaro SS that we recently had in had the feature.

Unlike a normal adjustable suspension, magnetic ride control is infinitely customizable in terms of shock absorber stiffness. Many times per second a computer analyzes the car and the road and adjusts accordingly. Because it can be controlled per wheel, it allows for some interesting setups.

For example, when cornering, the car can make individual dampers stiffer to help prevent body roll. When going over a railroad track or potholed pavement, the car can glide over it. The engineers can infinitely customize the setup to get the best setup in any condition.

Of course, spring rate comes into play, so a sports car will feel stiffer than a luxury car with the technology, but it’s excellent technology on a sports car because it allows for greater variations between a sports mode and a touring mode.

It’s something you need to experience for yourself, and it’s something you’ll probably want on your next car.
