Default Brake Vacuum Booster

I am trying to replace the vacuum booster on a 1997 Sierra. The instructions say to disconnect the booster rod but leave out the part about the steering column being in the way. Is there an easy way to do this or does the column bracket need to be removed too?

I did this on my 94, same issue. Instead of taking out the steering column and having to deal with that I spent the extra time using a wrench and beer.
