Default No 4wd low...

I looked but can't find my answers. No 4wd low. 2000 Silverado electronic 4wd switch. 4 Hi works, goes into auto 4wd fine. Replaced dash switch no change. Had truck in neutral as required, tried while truck was 2-3 mph, nothing. No warning light issue. Any ideas? 4wd low switch light flashes but won't fully engaged...It just goes back to whatever it was in before.
Thanks people! Hopefully you have the answer...

make the shift in neutral with the truck stopped and see if it completes the shift.

Sorry I didn't make it clear in original post. I have tried to put in 4 low (while in neutral) sitting still, coasting at very low speed... Tried everything in the owners manual. 4 low indicator will flash for 30 seconds or so and then just revert back to whatever it was in before whether 2 hi or 4 Hi or auto.

i would check the transfer case control module for dtc. a code reader will not access these dtc....a full function scan tool is required.
if a dtc is set you will have to find and follow the dtc diagnostics. sorry i don't have diagnostic sheets. they may be helpful.

since the tcase can make the 2-4 hi shift, the problem may be a weak encoder motor or in the tcase itself. disconnect the electrical connector and remove the encoder motor...put a wrench on the shift stub and see if you can manually make the shift to 4 low. if yes, the encoder motor is probably nfg.

price out a encoder motor and ask yourself if its worth $300 to $1000 for a shift range you may never use?

Ouch. You may well be right as to what the problem is. I think I will just leave it the way it is now. Just have to get over my obsession to have everything right mechanically. The truck runs well and I have 4 Hi. I can live with that!
Thanks for your help!

change the fluid. periodically, keep trying it and over time it may start making the shift...if it doesn't, nothing lost. the fluid should be changed every 50 000miles anyway
