Step by step instructions for do-it-yourself repairs.
2008 5.3l AFM "Blown" Lifters & Camshaft $$$$
#252
Looking for any advice.
My 2008 Suburban is sitting at the dealer now. Just towed in with a broken camshaft. Dealer quoted $9500 for a GM engine with a discount down to around $7500. This is 14,000 miles after they installed Pistons, Rods and seals because of the oil consumption issue. That cost me $2100 because I was told GM would only pay for half of that repair since My truck was over 5 years old.
Truck only has 112500 miles on it. Just looking for some help here.

The dealer decided to price match the local Jasper installer and will be installing a new GM crate motor for $5600. Not sure how long I'll keep the truck, but at least the motor has a 3 yr/100k mile warranty.

Same Lifter Cam issue
Experiencing the same issue as everyone else. I have a 2008 LTZ 1500. All maintenance done according to recommended schedule and done at local Chevy Dealer. No major issues until today. 80K miles and looking at a minimum of replacing lifters and cam shafts. Given the option to replace the motor. We baby this truck and drive about 10K miles/year. Can't believe we are potentially putting a new motor into a nicely maintained truck with only 80K miles. Aarggh. Was geting ready to buy another brand new identical truck but will put that on hold until I see how this plays out.
Sure seems like there should be a recall on this?????

2009 Chevy Avalanchee
Reading all the posts and wondering if I can use as leverage. 4 years ago I bought a 2009 Avalanche from Carmax, purchased the bumper to bumper warranty, thought I was protected. Wrong. My truck has 133,000 miles on a 150,000 warranty. During a 3 hour drive I heard a small pop...like bubble wrap pop. No warning lights came on, all gauges stayed normal but still I was concerned might have lost fan belt. Stopped, didn't turn off engine and looked under hood. Everything looked and sounded fine. Got back on road. Whole trip ran fine. Once I cut off the engine and recranked it though sounded like engine was going to fall out. Check engine light on, traction control off and stability control off warning lights came on. My husband changed my oil 3 months ago but before going on once a month trip to GA I check fluids. All were fine. Even with engine messed up oil pressure reading normal. I had a shop I trust look at it. Said it was giving strange codes but when I went in oil was almost gone. Didn't understand that. They told me it sounded like lifters but to be sure take to local dealership to have them run Chevy diagnostic....it showed #6 lifter collapsed and oil consumption issue and possibly seals and pistons....so new engine. Took it back to original shop, said they could have new engine in it in 2 days. When they called CNA National who the Carmax warranty is through it was denied. They were told the engine must be torn apart so an inspector can look at it. Since there is a Carmax service center in Tallahassee I thought maybe they could get better results. They got the truck on a Tuesday. Told me they didn't have an engine specialist so had to go to Chevy dealer. It is now Tuesday the next week finally got diagnosis from dealer...needs a new engine. #6 lifter is collapsed and oil consumption problem. Once again told engine must be broke down so inspector can see. For this to occur I must pay dealership 1950.00 and no guarantee it will be covered. I purchased a warranty for emergencies, I am a retired Soldier so don't have this kind of money so maybe they will fix my truck. This sounds like a racket so they can get out of paying the warranty. Oh and once the inspector is set to look at it they will give me a rental car for a week....Already been without vehicle for 10 days now. Driving daughters.
Any one find out if there is any kind of recall for this issue? Also what department at GMC should I contact to seek help?
Thank you. Kay
