Possible Limp Mode Issue?

Possible Limp Mode Issue?
hey- i'm new to this so hopefully this is not a terrible question....
driving home today my 08 2500 6L V8 (gas) 142,000 miles, was hovering around 2500-3000 rmps and wouldn't go below 2500 (even when coasting in neutral). rolling terrain but the truck seemed to really only want to go 40mph'ish. i read some threads about Limp Mode and kinda seemed like those descriptions. i unhooked the battery when i got home and then when i went to pick our kid up it seemed to run fine...
however, below the speedometer a random "1" has appeared to the right of the PRNDM readout. It is not the Manual 1, it shows when in park, reverse, etc. i have attached a picture.
otherwise, no check engine light came on.
thanks for any thoughts, ideas or suggestions!!!
