Hey guys, My dads mold shop did the nameplate for the 4.5liter diesel engine that was scheduled to be put in the 09 half ton chevy and GMC trucks. All i know is that it is supposed to put out unparalleled torque and power with amazing fuel economy. I know they converted a factory somewhere in New York or the Northeast to make this diesel, but I just don't know if GM will still go through with it since they suspended operations back in December.

I just got the thinkin about this today when I saw that diesel is down to $1.85 and gas is $2.03.

Anybody know somethin' I don't???

It sounds promising to me, but I think a 4.5 is a little small. I guess it depends on how much air is pushed through it as to how much power it has. You know more about it than I do though.

You sure you didn't see the fuel oil price? Diesel is still $2.25 here

Nope, diesel around here is plummeting like a lead brick..

I think 4.5liters is about right since they speculate it'll put out over 550 lb/ft torque and something like 310 horsepower. They also say it will get 40% better fuel economy than a 5.3 half ton in city/highway, but the real kicker is it will get 80% better economy when pulling than a 5.3

Look at these prices

That sounds like a great thing for GM. Maybe they can call it lil' max, or is that already taken by a rapper? :D lol

I prefer to talk in intelligent terms so I would prefer the badge miniature max :D

Actually it would've been a good concept except when digging a little further I discovered Ford is offering a 4.4liter diesel and Dodge is going for a 4.8 I think

Just think what a little "bullydog" tweaking would do for it though.

i cant see the article, but a 4.5 diesel would be awesome
the 6.2 and 6.5 that they put in the 90's trucks got over 20 mpg
although they didnt have as much power as the 4.5

When I first heard of this engine I set up a Google news email alert for it, cause I want it put one in my Astro. Latest quote from GM, “Because of the current economic conditions, we have placed on indefinite hold the introduction of a 4.5L."

From what I understand the engine development is done, it's just not heading to production yet.

really wish chevy coulda pulled thru on this one. My stepdad was waiting for 1 of the "Big Three" to produce a small diesel halfton. his ol'95 chevy v-6 finally gave out and he bought a dodge. We don't talk about that incident. LOL

I'm still a little irritated with GM about this.

I've been holding off on buying a new Yukon in hopes that they'll put this diesel in production.

Has anybody actually seen the specs for that thing? No intake manifold (that's right... no intake), heads are backwards (yep, backwards) exhaust manifolds come out on the valley side since there is no intake to hog that space.

Air is actually shoved directly into the top of the valve cover straight off the turbo (which sits in the valley as well).

I want this Duramax soooooooooo bad.

Wow that must be a well made diesel to be that small and product that much HP. I hope moves like this will help get them back on track with their sales. Fuel efficency is a big plus in my book.
