the car hesitates or stumbles under acceleration and also idles rough, but only when the engine is cold. once it is up to operating temp it runs fine.

Check spark plugs, replace if worn/correded. You typically will not notice hesitation/chugging/mis-fire at speeds above 80/90 kmh or when engine is hot.
