Hi all, I'm new to the forum and I hope you can help.

Today our 2003 TB EXT speedometer stuck on 70 MPH while the cruisde control was engaged. It now drifts down to 50 or so and goes up to the max as we drive. I have not tried to disconnect the battery yet, but I assume it is mechanical. Recently we had the right front wheel bearing replaced, if this helps diagnose the problem.

Is the cluster bad, or where should I look? Other ideas?

Thanks.

I have an '04 Trailblazer and this has just started happening to me as well. I noticed on my way to work last week that it wouldn't go past the 20 mph mark, but it was fine when I drove home. I was driving yesterday and noticed it was stuck on 75 mph. I stopped and turned off the engine to see if it would reset, but it stayed in the same spot. Then when I started driving again, it went all the way past 120. There have been no repairs done, so I'm not sure what the problem is. I would also like advice on this issue before I take it for an inevitably expensive trip to the dealership. Thanks!

I disconnected my negative battery terminal for a minute and reconnected it. It seemed to zero it out and work fine after a short drive. I'll see if this fixes the problem in the long term.

Since last November, my speedometer has acted up. I was picking my son up from the airport and notice the speedometer was at 110 MPH, I thought I had crashed and my son and I were racing to heaven. I tried disconnecting the battery, that works just for a little while. It's hit or miss when I get in whether or not it will work. I took it to the dealership, it was not covered under warranty but the technician said I needed a need speedometer cable.I thought it was just me until I just read these other notes, you think they should do a recall?

I have a 2003 EXT Trailblazer and the RPM needle is acting crazy. It does not want to go back to zero and stays up on like five or six RPMs. If I disconnect the battery, completly, it will zero out, but then it starts climbing again. I have checked everything I know how, even took the gauges display console completely out, to see if it was a loose cable. But it has one electrical plug that runs everything. What I am thinking is either; the gauges display console is going bad or there is an electrical plug, on the engine somewhere that controls that specific gauge. I have bought the HAYNES manual with negative results.

Same thing happened to me EXCEPT that is is the RPM gauge.

surfrata.

Hi,

I have had the same problem twice with my 03 Suburban. First time it fixed itself on the same trip, second time it didn't.

I read some posts, spoke to a dealer. The posts suggested disconnecting the -ve battery lead. Dealer suggested a $500+ cluster replacement.

I tried the disconnect and got it back to zero and it seems to be ok, although its only a day, and haven't called the dealer back.

One thing I did realize though was that it stuck when using the Cruise Control on the highway. I tend to to switch the CC on and off a bit due to traffic and mountain highway driving not overly suitable for CC.

I haven't fully explored this but it is food for thought - use of CC is causing the speedometer to lock up at the CC speed setting.

Let me know if this works out for anyone.

Hi Iam new to the forum, but it looks like alot of people had the same problem as me. My 03 trailblazer had a speedometer that was stuck at 60 mph, and would only drop down to about 40 mph. Checked with a local dealership, the said it was a cluster problem and wanted about 600.00 for repair and needed my car for 2-3 days. I found a local shop outside of Seattle, that was able to due the repair in about 2 hours. Cost was 185.00 on the cluster and one hour in labor for repair. They said they are doing 5-10 of these a week, if you ship to them they said a one day turn around. Hope this helps some people out, and maybe save some money. Almost forgot the name was Tacoma Speedometer and Instrument.

I wanted to post up and say I too have this problem. Some days my speedo works perfectly and other days its either way off in one direction or the other. I noticed that when it goes off or "sticks" you can actually see it trying to move but its like its stuck or something.

Also at the same time that my speedo is messing up; my oil pressure needle also either drops to zero or goes up to the max. At first I thought my oil pump was going but I have found that the engine has perfect oil pressure. Its just the guage. I figure this is an electronic thing and THANK GOD I have this covered under my warranty. (I have a warranty from an outside warranty company - 3 years/36k and it covers everything.

I hate to say it but I'm glad I'm not the only one.

Has anyone found a solution to this speedo sticking problem? Other than the dealer. Thanks.

I just got this problem fixed in my 03 ls . The IPC is one big Unit . You can not fix just certain parts of it and the GM360s are known for problems with the IPC. Warranty should cover replacement with no problem. If you are out of warranty buy a US speedo version and they will even transfer correct miles for you and isalot cheaper then dealer.

I too have a 2003 Silverado that's out of warranty of course. Can you tell me how do I go about getting that "US speedo version" you are talking about? Thanks for the help.

THIS HAPPENED TO MY 2004 LT. I TOOK IT TO THE DEALER(COURTESY CHEVROLET MERCED, CA)AND THEY SWAPPED OUT THE INSTRUMENT CLUSTER. DIDNT COST ME A THING BECAUSE I HAD THE WARRANTY (UNDER 36K MILES)

HOWEVER..... IF YOU COMPLAIN ENOUGH AND THE PROBLEM STARTED WHEN THERE WAS A WARRANTY, YOU CAN HAVE IT REPLACED FOR FREE. THATS WHAT THE SERVICE ADVISOR TOLD ME

THE SPEEDO WAS STICKING AND THEN GOT COMPLETLY STUCK AT 15 MPH INCREMENTS. EVERYTIME I STOPPED THE SPEED STOPPED 15 MPH HIGHER THAN BEFORE.

GOOD LUCK ON YOUR QUEST

The problem is the small stepper motors in the instrument cluster that move all of the needles (Speedo, tach, gas, temp, etc.). If GM won't fix it for free, and you've exhausted all other avenues, you have some options without paying GM several hundreds of $. If you're handy with a soldering iron, you can fix the speedo for about $12, and the whole cluster for about $75, or you can have someone repair it all for you for about $150. The problem is the same withseveral 2003 to 2007 GM vehicles: most trucks andSUVs, and somecars. See my post in another forum for more details: http://www.topix.net/forum/autos/chevrolet-silverado-1500/TR5QAB2MN19BL1D2J/p8

Are there any instructions on removing the speedometer cluster from 2003 Trailblazer? I have the same problem with speedo and RPM needles going crazy

I have a 2004 Impala SS. The speedometer will not drop to 0; it's at 55 when the engine is off. I was hoping the system would reset itself by shutting off the engine and restarting, but that didn't happen. From what I have read on the forum, the only way to correct this is to replace the instrument cluster. Is this correct? Thanks,

My speedometer will get stuck between 30-70. Eventually after 2 days of driving it will reset back to 0 and last for several weeks until it happens again. I know eventually I will need to replace but dealing with it for now. Same thing happens to tachometer and after a day or so will reset.

Our 2003 I6 EXT just turned 106,000 miles and the oil pressure gauge would go to zero, and then pop right up and be normal. And then zero again. Our independant told be its very common with current GM SUV's right now.

This truck has been very good to us so far but the gauge issue worries my wife when she sees zero oil pressure!:D

I'm new to the sight and did not see any recent comments about the speedometer issue. I also had the same problem but only once, thanks to all of you for your responses to the individuals message, now when mine goes out again and continues I know what I'm facing. Anyone out there have any ideas on getting this to be a recall? I appears that many & many different vehicles are have the same problem.

I had, well currently have if I ever disconnect the battery, that same problem. Disconnect the battery and reconnect. you may have to spark the post a couple of times to get it to zero out if just disconnecting doesn't work.

I just had this occur on my 03 Trailblazer and is costing me 400+ to get fixed. I called chevy regarding the issue and they are "looking into it". I personally think this is ridiculous and don't understand why there are special provisions on Tahoe's, Envoy's, etc, but not Trailblazers.

On the way top work my 2003 Silverado just started the same. It has 103,000 and has been a great truck but I hate to drop 5 bills for a speedo fix. Seems like its a quality issue not just a intermittent problem. Has anyone gotten any assistance from GM on the cost if your vehicle was out of warranty?

Well, on my way home while using the cruise control at 70 mph, my speedometer is stuck as well and won't move on my 2004 Trailblazer EXT. I still have the extended warranty left, so guess I'll take it in. Bummer!!!

I own a 2003 trailblazer and have been expierncing this problem since shortly after I bought it. The dealer had told me that they could not find the problem since it always seemed to work when I took it in. This year my gas gauge completely failed and no longer works. I was finally able to get the problem diagnosed but now I am passed my waranty so they will not fix it. GM has just sent out letters to 03-04 Silverado, Tahoe, Suburban and Avalanche owners extending a waranty on their clusters for this exact problem, I have been on the phone with them for two days and all they tell me is that they have not had enough complaints to add Trailblazer to the extension. We all need to call and voice our complaints even if you have since had it fixed.

I have a 2004 Trailblazer and have had the same problem with the speedometer. What the person I talked to at the corporate level said was that there have not been enough complaints about the Trailblazer speedometer problem to make them take action. If you have this problem or you have had this problem and gotten it fixed, complain to Chevy corporate so they will be forced into action. Why should we suffer because we don't have Tahoes, Avalanches, Silverados, etc.?

Does anybody know who to call to make a complaint? Mine just started acting up last night on my way home from work, and I was not using cruise control at the time. I was just starting up from a red light and it was suddenly registering 100 mph. By the time I got home, three miles later, it was topped out above 120.

Hi, I know how you feel, I am equally as frustrated! My 05 TB speedometer went out this morning. I was in a school zone and it read 50mph, when I know I was barely at a crawl. I guess we should try to call 1-800-chevusa. Maybe if we both called today we could get some results. My warranty is expired and I hate to think what this is gonna cost....

Same problem. It started once the temp hit below freezing in my area for the first time this year also. My speedometer was reading a lot faster than I was going, for example it said 120mph when I was going about 10mph. Everyday is different with the wacky speedometer, one day it will read 0mph, the next it will work and so on. I bought it used and it has 83,000 miles on it.

As per the encouragement from previous messages, I called and filed a complaint. EVERYONE MUST CALL CHEVROLET AND FILE A COMPLAINT. As per the Chevrolet Customer Service Desk, they must receive a set number of complaints for the same problem before they will issue a recall

The number I called was (800) 222-1020 and filed a complaint.
Chevy is aware of this problem, and I even talked to my friend who works at GMC dealership and he said they get 5-10 GMC/Chevy's from 2003-2004 in to replace the speedometer. Everyone just needs to call and file complaints.

Also call 1-866-790-5700 Ext. 11975 and talked to Salvador. Heset up an appointment for GMC to do a diagnostic on my truck and GMC will pay for the problem if it is the cluster/speedometer! I will see if this pans out............................

We have a '04 Trailblazer that had this problem 3 times. When taking it back to the Dealer, they finally replaced the instrument cluster on 1/4/08. We have an extended warranty/$100.00 deductible. Total cost parts and labor $742.27 - my cost $100.00. Have many more problems - will post later.

I have an '04 Trailblazer and my speedometer is always sticking. I have tried to email GM which seems to be impossible. Does anyone know how to contact them? I have heard this complaint for such a long time, but GM says they are not getting enough complaints.
Does anyone know of a place to order this part for cheap if GM will not fix it?

As of now everyone I know with a speedometer problem has decided they will make sure if they get into an accident they will tell the police and other driver(s) their speedometer wasn't working. I can't believe it will take lawsuits to get this resolved. I guess it all comes down to how much money they may loose?

Most automakers have long ago disabled any communication between the company itself and the consumer except through the dealer. There was supposed to be a recall on the gauges and they were supposed to be fixed, but whatever happened to that I have no idea.
I know it is annoying. Mine kept doing the same thing in my Blazer. It seems to only happen when I disconnect and reconnect the battery. Thats also the only way to fix mine...
