85 wrangler, what exactly do u mean by "what makes them different?". no they're not that easy 2 narrow. yes u can put a posi in your rear. (sure hope he don't take it the wrong way.)

doh! he's definatley gonna take it the wrong way now! [sm=smiley36.gif] ha! i'm just messin' with ya wrangler. how's the weather out there, any white stuff yet?

GM's 12 bolt is the strongest rear end they have. Shortening of the axles should be done by professionals. You have to get flush cuts on the tubes, cut and weld the mounts and have the axles custom cut and splined. Yes you can convert an open diff into a posi or a locker.

My buddy blew out every gear in his 86' when he was back down his driveway. That's when he had a 10 bolt in the rear of it. No warning or anything of it happening, blew the diff cover off and everything. So he put a 12 bolt in the rear of his truck and 3:88 gears, he had 4:10 gears before. That's working much better for him now. So I would go with a 12 bolt if you can.
