the low coolant light is on on my 2000 impala ls, the coolant level is fine though. i checked the radiator and it is filled almost all the way up(normal). found leak on intake manifold gasket on the head on the front of the engine close to the throttle body. also the car sounds funny when i drive it, almost like a slight grinding or scratchy feel to it on the gas pedal. When cruising on the freeway the rpm wont drop below 2,000 rpm. it didnt used to do this. I read somewhere on another site about a tsb about this, but my impala is way out of warranty. I think it involved replacing the intake manifold? or is it justt he gasket?does anyone have anymore info on this? thanks so much for reading</P>

Unplug the sensor to take care of the problem.... unless you want to want to spend money on a new one.

i have read many stories about the sensor going bad...

I had the low coolant light on for about two weeks and the coolant level always appeared OK, but finally the goodwrench mehanic told me I had a slow leak on the radiator. Changed the radiator (for a jobber one) and no more problemo !

I had the same experience on my 2002 3.4l Impala. 75000miles I found that the sensor was not working. I think this was due to a buildup of sludge from the antifreeze. I was able to clean off the tip of the sensor with paint thinner and it worked for a couple of weeks. The sensor is difficult to remove,naturally, and you must take off the o-rings before you clean it otherwise you will damage them. Remove all traces of paint thinner before reinstalling. Since this repair only lasted a couple of weeks, I would recommend replacing the sensor with a new one ($60 ?).



I also had a slight antifreeze leak at a bolt on the intake manifold under the throttle body. I was able to remove it , apply gooy gasket sealer on the threads and reinstall which so far has fixed the leak. The bolt seemed looser than normal when removing it.
After doing all this, I flushed the system out and put in new antifreeze.

I know this is an old posting, but I thought I would reply for future reference. My 2001 with a 3.4L had the same problem. I had to replace the coolant sensor. This was a pain in the butt to do because I had to remove so much stuff to get to it. As for the manifold gasket, I had to replace that too as it cracked and broke into pieces. The pieces fell into the engine and jammed up a lifter. Needless to say the coolant then injected into the oil pan. Apparently GM started to use a "plastic" manifold gasket. I would keep a close eye on this. Hope this posting helps.

I have a question similar to this posting but is slightly different. I have low coolant in my 2002 impala and I can't figure out how to drain all the coolant I dont have a drain plug and the clamp attached to the hose is corroded. [:@] PLEASE HELP!!!

Intake gaskets in 3.4 and 3.1 engines are horrible. Replace when you get your first leak

Can you get to the clamp at the motor end of the bottom rad hose?
If you have a worm gear clamp, you can cut it off with a pair of side cutters

So where exactly is the low coolant level sensor located?
