2007/08 Trailer Towing
I am looking to purchase a 2007 or a 2008 Avalanche to tow my 6,000 pound travel trailer. I notice that the tow rating of the avalanche is around 800 pounds less than the equivalent Silverado. Can someone tell me why that is and would you recommend the Avalanche for towing a trailer? Also, the ones I am considering do not have the tow package so I am wondering how much it would cost to add that to the Avalanche. Your responses are appreciated.

weight of the vehicle is one factor. A comparible p/u is 500lbs lighter, 700 if the p/u is 2wd.
What % of driving will be towing? If alot, get a 6.0L engine option with the 4.10 rear end. It will also have the beefier transmission with the tow haul feature that changes trans shift points.

Thanks tech2 for your response.
So the suspension for the Avalanche is identical to the suspension of the 1500 Silverado with the difference in tow rating due to the relative difference in the weight of the two vehicles? Makes sense to me.
I am not going to be pulling a trailer very often. We plan on pulling a trailer twice a year from Mississippi to Connecticut (around 1,200 miles) and then maybe 4 short trips a year (less than 200 miles round trip). I have been looking at used Avalanches around Mississippi and have seen very few 6.0L engines. In fact, I don't recall seeing any. The trailer we are looking to purchase is not very large, maybe 26 feet and 4500 pounds. I feel better knowing that the suspensions of the Avalanche and the Silverado 1500 are the same.

Obviously, some of the other things to consider are as follows -
1. Gear Ratio: GM offers several different options from the factory including 3.08, 3.42, 3.73, and 4.10. The higher the better when it comes to towing.
2. HD Towing Package
3. Integrated Brake Controller: Not necessary, but is useful if you need it.
4. Transmission Cooler
5. Auto Leveling: This is offered on the LTZ's.
Good luck with your search, and keep us updated!
