Angry Ticking Sound

As soon as I turn on my 04 avalanche, I hear a ticking sound. I have been told that it could be an exhaust manifold leak? Or catalyic converter leak.? Anyone else have this problem before? It has 140,000 miles. Original engine.

try flushing the oil with a cleaner (i like synthetic oil for the instant oil pressure on start-up)

I don't know the cause of this but I have a 2005 with 93,000 miles on the 5.3 and mine has had a ticking during startup on and off ever since I got it brand new. I know this doesn't help but I wouldn't worry too much about it. Might go ahead and check for exhaust leaks etc. like everyone else said though.

I have taken my 04 avalanche just yesterday to check out why the ticking sound is loud at start up but goes away after you get going. The mechanic says that its a common problem on the 5.3L at around 130,000-160,000 miles. He gets these alot and believe it or not, its not the lifters. Well not entirely. Its the oil pump not sending oil to the lifters. You will need to replace the pump and it would be good to also replace the water pump since its coming off anyways. But thats the ticking sound guys, its the oil pump!! Peace

Can the Oil pump be replaced by just removing the oil pan? I haven't tore into my 5.3 before so I wasn't sure. I've been having this issue for a long time I hope nothing has gone bad because of it.

Oil pump ??? watch the pressure gage when you start, if there is no delay in building pressure that I doubt that the problem is the pump. The 5.3 is notorious for piston slap on cold start.... mine does too. Noise goes away in a minute or two as the pistons warm up and expand.
