Default KEY REPLACEMENT

1998 Lumina sedan.

Key replacement.

I have the two original keys. I need more. What is the deal on purchasing new ignition keys? I do have a small piece of metal that states on one side KNOCK OUT and on the other 08 M3. I found this inside a small envelope in glove box. Also inside this envelope was a small white paper with a barcode with the number *25K9* and I have no idea if this barcode number has anything to do with the keys.

Does this ignition key need to be purchased from a Chevrolet Dealer or from any locksmith? And does the key then need to be programed? And who does the programing?

Called Pass-Key II, I think.

Dealer only for those keys to get "programmed." It's just a resistor chip.

Dealer only?

OK. What is the cost for a replacement and/or duplicate key in your area? I would like a ball park figure.

Does the dealer actually make the key or just put the chip in it and then I must go to a locksmith for key to be cut?

I ordered my key from the stealership for $60 canadian. They send me to the locksmith to get it cut and the locksmithtells me that they could have sold me the key for $30. In fact they have them in stock, all 15 different resister values. The dealership had to order it in. The guy cut my key for free as he said that I had paid enough already.

Go to 1 of the larger locksmith companies in your area and they may have it in stock and save you some money.

The key with the chip is around $35-45. They canlook up yuur key part number by the chip that is in the key. The will insert it into a reader & it will give them acode. If there is no original key to goby the service department has to do it &it'll takeabout an hour. No telling how much service will charge forit. But, itlooks like the 25k9 is probaly your key code (how the notches are put in the key)

If you have a knockout its not a program key.
If it has the black handle it could very well be.

The FOB's can be programed to unlock your doors by tossing the FOB on the floor.
Then get a wire and go from #1 to #2 on the outlet under the dash.
Just a "U" shaped wire.
Then it will be able to unlock that vehicle.

Programmed keys like our 07 Tahoe.
Key was stuck in the ignition at the bank.
Nothing would work.
The cop there said it had to go to a dealership.

WEll I called a local locksmith, he told me he could do it.
He came out and after tinkering with it for some time, he was able to get the key out.
He made a new one, and said this new style key was a big problem.
And had I had it towed to a dealership, I would pay for towing, plus the dealer would probably have called him out to replace the switch & key. $$$$
Plus charge another $100.00 for them.

This guy can get into a BMW.
He said his equipment costs more than the Chevy van he drives.
So a good long time lock smith would be the way to go.
Ask them if they are able to do that type work first.

My 04 truck still has same key with no problem.
But it is different looking then the Tahoe key.
