Default Brake lights don't work

I have a 2008 Colbalt Sport sedan and the brake lights don't work. Running lights, blinker and back up lights work. I have replaced the brake light switch and checked the fuses but still don't work. Cruise control doesn't work either and the I can shift from park to drive with the key off. Any ideas???

Are you checking them with the engine running? checking the brake lights with the engine not running only the center high mount stop lamp works.

The brake light switch is actually a sensor that should be relearned with a scan tool after replacement. If the BCM detects a problem it will set a code and the stop lamps will likely always be on with the vehicle running.

The BCM has separate circuits for the CHMSL (center high mount stop lamp) and the lower lamp. The grounds are the same as the working tail lights.

So the failure is most likely a problem with the input to the BCM from the brake position sensor.

You'll need to connect a scan tool (tech-2) to relearn the brake position sensor and check for correct operation
