1968 327 Harmonic Balancer?
Hello guys and gals. Yes, I am a new member here and up front and foremost, I am a novice at engines and engine building. Thus, my first question..lol. I bought a 1968 Chevelle awhile back that has 327 that has been sitting since the late 70's. It is stuck. I have not pulled the manifold or heads yet. I first tried the (all different) types of lubricants in the spark plug holes, and the breaker bar on crank bolt (which I did not break off, thankfully) to no avail. So I removed the crank bolt and pulled the front pulley off the balancer. My question, how far is the crankshaft snout suppose to be inside the balancer hole? All the way flush, from back to front? An inch? Mine looks like the balancer is barely hanging on the snout of the crankshaft. I'm just wondering if it's the wrong balancer? A broken crank (but how could it move backward with crank bolt through pulley)? Any comments, info, advice would be greatly appreciated! Thanks for a great site.

Usually there should be a standoff for the balancer to butt up against, the crank bolt should pull the balancer on through to where it needs to be. If it's been sitting since the 70's, might as well rip that motor out and rebuild. Depending on what you have in mind for her.

ballancer
usually the ballancer goes in about 1" to 11/2 it bottoms out on the crank timing gear .when you use a correct ballancer puller on it you can measure the depth .

Have to agree with old dog, and also assuming it's been run you can see the rubbing from timing cover seal and that should give u a good idea of if your in the right spot. You shouldn't be able to see crankshaft if everything is in place as the balancer seals with the timing cover
