Default First Post - Inherited a Block

Due to unfortunate circumstances, I have inherited a Chevy smallblock from a man that lived across the street from my parents.

The only info I have is that it is a 327 bored 30 over and there is a supposed forged crankshaft on the floor too.

I'd like to build an engine out of it, but being legally blind, and without a stream of ready income. I am wondering if it can be done with say a master rebuild kit from RPM, and some heads/intake/carb/distributor from ebay or craigslist?

anything can be done. what needs to happen first is a full inspection of parts done by a competent machine shop. they will be able to determine if block is good, the bore size, if crank has or needs to be turned as well as full inspection of the heads, if you have those two. after inspection, and if all is well with block and such, you will be able to order the right parts and the right sizes.

No heads, just a bare block and crank. There is a good shop right down the road that I've heard good reviews on.

What should I expect to pay for a hot tank, and magnaflux?

yes that is a good way about it, although when buying heads and conn rods off the internet make sure it of good quality, there are a lot of chinese imports floating around for dirt cheap, so be aware. as for the rest of the things you will nees (pulleys alternator and such, wait for a the car you will be putting the engine in and use those parts, but first do as maxman said and get the good shop looking at what u have

expect a tank and mag to run about $150 or so. maybe a little less, maybe a hair more. it has been awhile since i've paid full shop rate for this.

Guy down the road says it's $50 to clean and mic it, and $45 to mag it.

Doesn't sound too bad
