Trouble setting 5.7 vortec distributor
Ok Installing a distributor in a 1997 chevy 1500 5.7 engine
Set engine to TDC
Line up white line on the distributor with indent hole on bottom.. when I insert the rotor, the rotor turns backwards to the firewall instead of frontwards to the number one position.
See diagram ..
The white line indicated by "3" in the diagram below does not appear on the distributor, but there is a white line closer to the top of the shaft
when I install it, the distributor rotates counter clockwise, 45 degrees towards the passenger side, instead of going 45 degrees to the drivers side to line up with the #8 mark.
If I manually install it to force a line up with the #8, once its dropped down, the truck runs but it runs at 3000 plus RPM.. Only code is sometimes a p0340 or p1345 ..
What would cause the distributor to rotates backwards or cause a extreme high idle.

High idle sounds like a vacuum line.
I just installed a distributor in a 5.7 and the only way that I found was trial and error. Once you find the correct gear tooth alignment to hit #1 cylinder, are you needing to get the oil pump slot lined up?

You may get lucky and get the dist. dropped in correctly without a scan tool capable of reading cam retard, but not likely.
Use a long flat blade screwdriver to move the oil pump drive shaft small amounts until you get everything to drop in dead nuts on tdc.
Then you need to hook a scan tool to the vehicle and set the cam retard with the vehicle running. I think the spec is 0 to-2 degrees (not a lot of room for error)
I learned this the very hard way, engine backfired while cranking and broke the nose cone off the starter and broke the block where the starter mounts and pooched the flexplate!
