Exclamation Stalling problem

Hello,
I have a '88 Monte Carlo 4.3 V6.
I've been having this issue where the car will stall right after starting up.
When I turn the key it starts up emmediately and then stalls out. After it stalls it seems like the engine will reverse its rotation and push smoke out of the throttle body. When this happens I can not get the car to stay on. The weird thing is this happens half the time, the next time I try to start it(different day) it will start right up and run great. I only use this car occasionally to cruise so it sits for a week or more at a time.
I've changed the cap and rotor and checked all wirers and plugs & they seem to be OK.

any help would be great
Thanks

Possibly the gas filter.

Carefully check under the hood for loose, missing or worn out vacuum hoses.

Check your distributor for a cracked cap, a loose or damaged rotor, and a functional ECM with dielectric grease on the metal surface.(on the bottom)

Possibly your idle control is not adjusted, or your fuel pump is not functioning.
