Safe to change transmission filter on high mileage 1995 Cheyenne?

Safe to change transmission filter on high mileage 1995 Cheyenne?
I was wondering if anyone could advise me if it is safe to change the transmission filter and fluid on a 1995 Cheyenne 2wd v6 c2500 with 163,000 miles on it?
I changed the fluid about 35,000 miles ago and would have replaced the filter then too, but the shop was out of stock on the filter at the time.
The transmission seems to be running fine. It shifts well and does not slip or act strangely that I can tell.
The reason I am asking is that I have heard a few horror stories about changing the fluid and filter on high mileage transmissions.
Any opinions/experiences would be greatly appreciated. [sm=smiley20.gif]

I would say yes it is safe to change in my professional opinion because the trans fluid is the one that suspends all the old clutch particles.
