305 TBI converting to carbureted???
hi
i have an 1985 C-10 with a very tired 305 carbureted engine, 4 speed manual
and i have the opertunity to get a fresh rebuild 1989 TBI 305,
the question is can i convert the TBI to carbureted?
would it be as easy as pulling the manifold, dist, and fuel pump from the carb engine and puting it on the TBI engine?
are there any other issues would run into like diffrent bell housing patterns, motor mounts, starter position?
how much did the engines change from 85 to 89?
regards
Mike

i actually did this conversion few years ago. you will have to get an intake manifold that fits the tbi motor, edelbrock sells them, summit racing, etc. paid like $140 for mine. the manifold will allow you to use 4 barrel carb, hei distributor and such. you will not be able to take the intake off the 85 motor and use it on the tbi motor. the 4 bolts (2 on each side of throttle body) on tbi motors are set at a different angle than the 85 motor. also, the tbi motor will probably have the fuel pump blocked off. you can use an electric fuel pump either in tank or external, just mount it as close to the gas tank as you can. you will probably also need a fuel pressure regulator as carbs generally only need like 5-7psi. here is a link to summits site that shows the exact intake you need.

Also if the 89 doesnt include a flywheel you'll need one for an '87 up because they stared puting a counter weight on when they switched to 1 piece rear main seal...the 85 doesnt have the wieght
