Transmission Mission
Hi Guys
Yes, this is my first post and I'm going to ask a question. I know this is often frowned upon but I'm desperate for help. I'm going to write something about myself in another section straight after this.
So, does anybody know whether the gearbox from a 2000 Oldsmobile Bravada will be compatible with my 1996 Chevy Astro ? I know they both use the 4L60E but after hours of investigative research or Googling I'm suspicious still. Same gearbox model code but I've read about subtle changes in the design and I'm not sure if they're to be considered as upgrades/improvements internally or whether something outside the case will mean it won't fit.
I've found a gearbox that was reconditioned a few hundred miles ago and mine has just failed (torque converter I think).
Any help would be very much appreciated and I look forward to spending some time reading all (maybe not all) the threads here.
The one with the diagnostic flowchart looks good but I cannot access it from work for some reason.
Cheers
Tony

I'd heartily advise you scope this one out carefully before making any moves. Generally things don't cross over that easily between that many years and models/makes.
A junkyard interchange manual would do you a world of good right now.

I had a chevy astro with a racing 350 in it. The trans we used was a built 700r4 the same thing as a 4L60E. Everyone downs the 700 but if you built it rith it can be ur best friend. If you do get a rebuilt trans make shure that its FULLY rebuilt not refurbished. If you get a used one make shure that it had the same size engine in front of it or else you could run into some trouble. Here is my advice i would tear down ur old trans and rebuild it urself. That way you know what parts are in it. If you need help doing this or have any ?'s just give me a shout!

Very kind offer Jimmy, thank you.
I'm going to get it up in the air and remove the sump pan first. It might be me more clues as to where the problem lies, I hope so anyway. I spoke to a Corvette specialist/restorer last night and he doesn't think the torque converter is shot.
I like the idea of rebuilding the gearbox myself but I'm utterly clueless with them, I don't have a place to work, have limited tools and need it fixed within 2 weeks. I've got a 1700 mile round trip to make so I'm starting to wonder whether I just give it to a specialist and fork out plenty of cash

Thanks for the replies chaps and apologies for not posting an update earlier.
To be honest I feel like a bit of a plonker. I nursed the van around to a local garage using only 1st gear and by the time I got there and asked one of the mechanics to come around the block with me to hear the noise, it had disappeared !!
I'm still no better off for knowing what it was and that bugs me alot. However, I did complete a 1000 mile round trip 2 weeks ago without a hitch, the little beauty ran faultlessly.
I know tell everyone that Astro's a fabulous vehicles with a self-repair feature. All you have to do is worry/panic for a while and the problems will vanish !
My van is a 1996 AWD Starcraft conversion, I should have mentioned that before.
Cheers
