Default Are the 4speed trans really that bad?

I really want to buy an impala as I need a very smooth driving car and price wise the impala is much more affordable than a camry/avalon/lexus/etc and supposedly the impala is one of the most smooth driving cars you can buy these days?
I can pick up a 2010 impala with low KM(~70k) for 7000 or I can get a 2012 wit h the 6 speed transmission and 96k Km for 10000. My wallet loves the idea of only paying 7 but from what I've read the 4speed transmissions in the impalas were very problematic and prone to failure? I need this car to last so if its a definite issue I will just buy the 2012 in which they fixed the transmission issues(they did right?).
Opinions?
