I have gotten the message off and on now for a few days straight. Do not replace the thermostat because that isn't the problem. The warning light will go off eventually and the temperature will read normal...trust me on this. I will say this though...the warning seems to reset faster if you turn the ac to "off" and leave it there until you see the temperature gauge go back to it's normal setting. Your just another victim of the "Engine Hot A/C Off" chaos....

I wish you wouldn't drop things like "trust me on this" and "just another victim." I had an interesting discussion with a new member wgf on his "ENGINE HOT A/C TURNED OFF" issue in thread https://chevroletforum.com/forum/sil...12/#post195438. It may shed some light on what may be happening with your vehicle and why I asked you on the "codes" you had them reset.

We could probably go back and forth on this for quite awhile but it's not going to fix the issue. I guess I am just amazed at the amount of postings I have found all over the internet with this same issue. Again, I will see if I can find my service receipt and get that scanned into my next message. The dealership claimed they found no issues and simply reset the DIC codes.

That's a big negative on "could probably go back and forth on this for quite awhile." However, I do take exception to insinuations and conclusions not backed by logic. You say you are "just amazed at the amount of postings" but you can't possible know how anyone has "this same issue," from the same root cause, nor can you give recommendations based on your sample quantity one. Come to think, I can't even know if you even have an issue. All I can do is patiently try to help you make sense in your specific case. It really isn't rocket science nor voodoo.

hi all,
i picked up my impala friday nite and drove it a little over weekend and now to/from work yesterday and this a.m.

Dealer indicated that the thermostat was opening too quickly and the car did not actually overheat, but b/c how the the system handles fault condition it disables the gauge and puts up the warning (in this case b/c the car was not coming to temperature as it should have).

All gauges, etc appear normal in the last 2 days. I will let update thread if/when this changes. I am surprised that the thermostat is failing so early in the life of the car (30K miles), and wonder if the computer is overly sensitive to a slowing of the thermostat because the shop person told me, if it were not for the computer pointing out this condition and there were not DIC message or disabling of the temperature gauge & a/c, i would have never known there was a "problem" and could have driven the car a long time with no bad effect.

if that is situation, then it would seem this car will continue to post this error (maybe at season changes when temperature fluctuates significantly) and the only way outside of a change to the computer to accept a wider tolerance on the thermostat reading, will be to keep a new thermostat in the car (???).

Thanks for the update.

Hope that's all there's to it. BTW, you may want to cultivate a relationship with the service department (regular maintenance, etc., but not unnecessary stuff) since it sounds like you have a keeper, at least the service advisor. Took the time to explain the issue in a logical manner, too.

i must say that i am much more impressed by Cheavy's dealer that the one used by snediaz.

hard to tell how it's all goona play out, but i'm suspecious when ODB codes just fix themselves.

I do think that the DIC message is much too specific and incorrect when it flashes an "engine hot" message for any undesirable temperature condition. In my case the message was misleading and contradictory to the underlying OBD codes. If GM wants to flash it for any ECM temp condition, a more generic warning would have been easier for me to deal with.
But, I'll say it again, Einst has the most appropriate advice. find the OBD code. FIX the OBD error first and the DIC message will go away.

P.S.
to add a bit more information to Cheavy's story.
The dealer may not have told you. Once the "ENGINE HOT" message appeared in the DIC a pending OBD II code started to register. In your case, i suspect it was P0128 which means the ECM had decided that the engine was not warming up as fast as it would like. ( i'm only guessing, since your story is very similar to mine).
You are correct that you would have suspected nothing were it not for the DIC message. especially since you were quick to visit the dealer.
however, my behavior is typically much less enthusiastic when it comes to visiting dealerships. My point is that had you waited for a few more driving cycles, the pending OBD code would become 'official' and the yellow "check engine" would flash, providing you with enough clues to proceed with the real cause of the problem.
