2001 Malibu 3.1l Ticking
I bought a 2001 Malibu (3.1L)that needed head gaskets and it had a ticking that sounded like it was coming from the top end. I thought it was a lifter noise. on top.
I replaced the head gaskets, lifters and put on rebuilt heads, and the ticking is still there.
The ticking goes away about 70% when off idle, but is always there.
Can a rocker arm cause this? How about a Bent pushrod? I'm pulling the valve covers (again) tomorrow, what do I look for?
Thanks,
Ian

If you suspect it's a rocker arm, there is a procedure in my Haynes manual (96 lumina) but still a 3.1l for setting them. What I'd check is for 0 back lash with each cylinder (I'd also suggest pulling plugs) at TDC, feel if you can roll the push rod, that dosen't mean they are correct, but I'd say that wou;ld be close enough, and problem is else where such as a collapsed lifter.
