Remote start only honks horn ~ does not start car
Our 2009 Malibu is a V-6 LTZ. When we depress the lock button and then hold the remote start button, it only honks the horn like we are thieves trying to steal the car. The DIC shows remote start "ON". HELP! There is not a reprogram remote section in our owners manual that I can see.

Either the ECM or BCM is getting bad input from a sensor. Things like a door latch reporting a door ajar or weird gauge readouts (ECT or MIL) are usually noticed during normal day to day. One thing that can't be seen without a scan tool is if the hood ajar switch is reporting an illogical state. If that's the problem, which it usually is, the whole hood latch will need to be replaced.

To start the vehicle using the remote start feature:
1. Aim the transmitter at the vehicle.
2. Press and release the transmitter’s lock button, then immediately press and hold the transmitter’s remote start button for about four seconds or until the vehicle’s turn signal lamps flash. The doors will lock.
When the vehicle starts, the parking lamps turn on and remain on while the engine is running.
NOTE: The remote vehicle start feature will not operate if any of the follow occur:
- The remote start system is disabled through the DIC.
- The vehicle’s key is in the ignition.
- The vehicle’s hood is open.
- The hazard warning flashers are on.
- The check engine light is on.
- The engine coolant temperature is too high.
- The oil pressure is low.
- Two remote vehicle starts, or one start with a time extension, have already been provided for that ignition cycle.
To have the transmitter programmed, please visit your dealer.
If you have additional questions, please feel free to contact me.

We also have a 2009 Malibu LTZ. We have 2 remotes, first one working fine including the remote start. Second remote works all but remote start. When used in attempt to start car it causes horn to honk?? Car will not start using this second remote? It worked fine previous? Tried changing remote batteries; that didn't solve issue. What do you recommend??
