Default Shift lever hard and indicator not working

My daughters '97 Lumina is hard to shift and the orange indicator shows error. I'm thinking it has slipped or something is broken. Any ideas??

Thanks!!

I just bought a one owner 99 LTZ and the column lever is almost impossible to move. Hate to revive an old thread, but they are similar.
Any ideas out there folks?

Default tranny selector lever hard to move=-

1998 lumina.220,000 miles .
i owned it since 45,000 miles.
a few years ago i had the problem.
look under the hood for the cable.
try spraying w/d 40 up into it.
get in the car and try to move it up and down many times.
also if it does free up for you,
make a habit of occasionally moving it up and down to keep it working freely.
i searched around the internet and alot of discussions about how easy it is to change the cable.

many posters said it,s often a little burr of the cable unfrailing and hanging it up.
