Sounds like it's not disengaging completely.
I'd do a Fluid Change, and repeatedly change from 2WD to 4WD several times. Often times, shellac builds up from non-use, and causes things like that. One really should set a schedule to operate in 4WD-Lo for a mile or more about once a month. It'll keep things stirred up in the Transfer Case and a lot more responsive about changing, when you want it to.
