Default do i need to shim the starter

ok ill start with the last time i replaced my starter i had to use shims in order to keep it from making a high pitched whining sound. since then i just replaced the pilot bushing, flywheel, clutch, pressure plate, and the throwout bearing and hydraulic cylinder. but now when i put the truck back together it sometimes make a bad grinding sound when i start the truck i did leave the same shim i had in there before but with the new starter should i take the shim out or put more in.
