Going up hill

Going up hill
I have a friend that her 1998 Chevy Blazer started having trouble going up hills. It will ping and knock and only slowly makes it up the hill. It has no power. But acts better on straight ground. Could this be the Cat converter?
Or timing issue.
We used to have a '92 blazer and it never had a problem like this.
Thank you-

Ok, I'm not replying! I'm on a phone and haven't figured this site out I guess??
I need help with my boys Blazer. Transmission works fine Wben you first get in or after it sits awhile. But, after 10-20 miles or maybe it's after it warms up? It stops shifting up or down and must be done manually. Then it just goes down to second, I think?, not first. And it will manually shift up to third but, I'm not sure if it's going I to OD?? Maybe it is? What could be the problem?? I've read all I can and it could be in "limp home mode"??? The truck also has a weird problem which I believe is in the wiring? If you hit a large bump or get on it hard it blows the gauges/charge fuse and you lose all the gauge function and it doesn't charge. Took it to an electronics repair shop and they couldn't locate it because it's an intermittent problem ? Dont think it's connected to the shifting problem though? Can anyone give me a hint on some things to try? PCM? Sensors? I'm sure wiring and connectors?? Thanks guys! I hope I've posted this in a place I can get answer?

Yes the cat might be plugged. It causes a real lack of power when plugged. Easy to check. Have someone rev it up while you put your hand over the exhaust and if there's not much air coming out that's probably it. But, as the other reply stated... You can go to just about any parts store and they will hook a code reader to it for free and tell you the problem. It could be any number of sensors and the code reader will tell you if one is bad

I guess it could be the transmission hell it could be four flat tires! But I sure didn't get that from what he wrote. Regardless , an analyzer would probably be a good place to start and free. I don't think a transmission would make the engine ping and knock?? But a good analyzer with transmission capability will tell you everything including the history of everything the motor and tranmission have been doing.
