Default help with restoring 86 s10

Hi all, I just bought an 86 s10, I'm not really familiar with the workings of this thing and I really don't want to buy a repair manual right now, I'd rather use the $ on parts. Any ways, the truck runs and drives good, I saw a few jimmy rigs under the hood but nothing too crazy, its missing the ac compressor but I really don't care about that. it also has the ses light on, im just trying to figure out where to start, I wanna fix whatever it is that needs to be fixed but I have to find what ever it is that may be fubar'd. what should I look for?

Welcome to the forum...
as for the SES, I would have the codes read, write them down, clear them and then see what comes back and go from there...
I suspect it being and 86' the codes will most likely apply to some emissions issues...

I'd say clear them by disconnecting the battery for several minutes and see if it comes back and go from there...

i found a part, not sure what it is, its mounted on the air cleaner housing, and has a 3wire connection going into it, with a vacuum hose coming off into the throttle body, there's also a vacuum hose missing between the air cleaner and the throttle body, seems like an easy fix. the timing is off a little bit, so i thought maybe this part on the air cleaner with wires has something to do with the electronic timing sytem cuz thats what that code is for, but i really dont have a clue

It was the map sensor, its all good now that I got the vacuum lines hooked up. As far as therr error codes go, I'm pretty sure theres an open or grounded conductor between the distributor and the ecm, I'm gonna check it out a little later today and see what I can find
