Default Idler arm ball joint replacement

The last time I took my truck (02 ZR-2)in for and oil change I was told that the ball joints (lower) on the idler arm were shot and needed replacement. They also stated that about every 30,000 this would need to be done. Is this true? I did catch a big rock one time in the past that might have caused this problem. []
Thanks in advance for knowledge and help given.

Idler arm and ball joints are common issues with the S10.

Thanks Golfer for the reply. Guess I had better get that part timer going and find a Chiltons manual or do you think it would be better off getting done at a shop? So far I have been hearing $4-600 for the repair here in Denver.

Replaced idler arm twice and the ball joints twice on the left, and 3 times on the right. The upper seem to go first.

Thanks for the reply msjoni what year truck do you have? Did you do it yourself? I was told that the lower ones were looking poorly and they said to do both (upper+lower) while it was torn apart.Kinda like getting two birds with one stone kinda sceniero and with it needing alignment as well it seems to me that a shop prolly should be doing it. Currently looking for a pt job to get the ball rolling in the right direction if I find that it's the wiser thing to do.

I had to replace the upper and lower. However, the right side was the most troublesome. I also forgot to mention that now I was told that the U Joint should be replaced. Its not the cost of the part, the labor. Its almost as if Chevy thought there name was Mercedez. You have the same problem with their cars. It costs to repair them.

One more thing. I was searching the web and found that in Canada, customers with Chevys are having problems with the intake maniforld, or head gaskets. The Justice Department is supporting them, and making Chevy foot the bill. All they have to do is file a claim with the Dept of Justice in Quebec. I emailed GMC tonight and gave them that tidbit of information. They are International!!!!
