Default Need help with thermostat 1996 corsica

Its a 1996 chevrolet corsica V6
I took some parts off a couple of times to try to access the bolts on the housing but I cant even get the socket on them.
It seems like It cant be done with the hard line from the waterpump in the way, I unbolted it from the waterpump end and tried to pry it a bit but no luck.
All the repair manuals show moving the heat shield down a bit ( I have done) but you cannot get at them. Pic.

ANother thing, the car has a strong gassy smell, 02 is good, no leaks under the car, what should I look at?

Any tips for me?
