Think 7-8 MPG. If memory serves, the large engine option on the El Dorados(absolutely FWD, BTW)
kicked out 380 HP stock. Back then most customizing was aimed at Interiors and Bodies, because the car easily had enough power, and engine mods would have changed the fuel consumption rate from MPG to GPH.
Yeah, I think a lot of people daydream about a El Dorado convertible as a second car, from time to time.
I had a couple of those massive GM cruisers from back then, I don't think most of the kids can even imagine the size and comfort of those interiors. I've seen living rooms which are smaller than the interior of my Olds 98.

My old '70 Cad had a 472 Cu.In engine turning out 325 HP but with a S.L. of torque. Some of those old front driver CAD's came with 500 Cubes, so yeah 7 or 8 mpg was doing pretty good (but fuel was 35 or 40 cents per gallon too). But it was the ride, both in and out of town, that made the difference to me.
BTW, I still like my Impala and consider it at least an equal to my old boat.
