Default ABC Teases viewers with new Chevy Volt

Years of anticipation and a growing electronic vehicle market have brought the Chevy Volt to the foreground of many automotive discussions. From the pages of Motor Trend to the Detroit Free Press, the automotive media has long awaited more information about this concept from General Motors, but some of the shots of a production model were released on Good Morning America.

This quick look at the driver’s side front corner of the car that GM hopes will help boost severely slumping sales showed us what we expected. While there styling with there, the corner of the production Volt looked more sensible than the concept seen touring over the past few years. The headlight and grille area are more typical of what you see on some current US models, with a sharp wrap around headlight and chrome mesh grille. The large lower openings from the concept are replaced by foglights and the new lower opening is similar in style to the current Chevrolet Cobalt. The fender of the vehicle has a more realistic shape to it, rather than the sharp, angular sides of the concept, and the exposed tire and wheel are sporty yet more production-looking than those seen on the concept.

Along with the sneak peek at the front corner, GM also introduced the world to the interior layout, which features a “pod like” design, wrapping the interior around the front passengers. A massive screen replaces the typical gauge cluster, and it looks as though we can expect the interior controls to be handled by means of the large centrally mounted touch screen.

The Volt is to debut as a 2011 model year vehicle, and we expect to see the production model and full specifications released at the 2009 NAIAS, if not sooner. Many accused GM of designing the car in such a manner that it would be impractical to produce, but with these few shots of the production model it looks as though they have preserved the look of the concept but have made it a more reasonable vehicle for production.
