Default '86 chevy van broken flex plate

i took off from a dead stop going uphill whan all of a sudden the flexplate broke. tranny housing was not broke nor anything else i saw. before putting this back together i was wondering if there is anything specific i should be checking for. is this a common problem for the th350? and do they just brake or did something else happen to cause it to break?

thank you, y13supio
