Default 1984 C4 Fuel Pump

I am thinking about buying a 1984 C4 Corvette for $2,000. He says the only major problems is the car is stuck in Overdrive and the fuel pump is bad. What kind of problems can the fuel pump cause? I know some older engines don't truly require one. Will the C4 run without it until I can replace it? Link to the car can be found here. Thanks in advance. http://spacecoast.craigslist.org/cto/940420288.html Register today for free or log-in if already registered to remove this ad!

Default RE: 1984 C4 Fuel Pump

I don't know of any engines that'll run w/ a bad fuel pump. Probably about $400 to $500 to replace. Tranny ovhl in the $1K to $2K range.

Be advised that the Crossfire Fuel Injection system that the '82 & '84 were blessed w/ is the second or third best idea. Very problemetic.

You can pick up a new fuel pump for about $50-70 brand new and they're EASY to change. No tank removal necessary, it pulls out from the top (filler).

Is this an auto or 4+3? If it's the 4+3 OD that's "stuck", it could very well just be a faulty or disconnected switch, which are both fairly easy fixes.

I agree though that the '84s get a bad rap and possibly for good reason. I'd look for the newest, lowest mile Corvette you can afford. $2k looks tempting on the surface, but a lot of other things can and WILL go wrong with the car that probably won't be as easy as the above fixes. The fuel pump was probably one of the easiest things I've ever changed on my '85.

EDIT: lol, I just looked at the date this was originally posted.... I rarely come to the corvette side of chevroletforum. This was "new" to me! I prefer corvetteforum for my Vette info and this one for my Tahoe stuff.

Thats ok. lol We have a good partnership with Corvette Forum.
In fact I have not been there in a while. Usually I'll holler at C3 Starship and make sure theres no spam going around.

I wish our Corvette section was a little more active though..
