When I purchased my youngest a laptop in the fall of 2007, her freshman year in college, it came with Vista. She never liked it from the start. She still has that laptop and uses it occasionally, and has gotten used to Vista somewhat, but still is not a fan of it.
Some of the things she mentioned about Vista:
- takes longer for the Vista platform to boot up and shut down
- with all the desktop bells and whistles that come with Vista, it puts a strain on her computer making some programs drag (she has a Sony Vaio)
- many games and software on the market will not run on Vista
I have heard of improvements made to this first batch of Vista that she has on her computer, and I'm sure it is better...but I for one am interested in what this new Windows 7 has to offer. My opinion...go with Windows 7 based on my daughter's experience with Vista.
I like Vista myself. I can't speak for 7, but the only problems I have had with my HP tablet PC are hardware-related (built-in card reader broke and wouldn't let it go into sleep mode). It is a great computer. No problems at all and its 15 months old.
My mom's Toshiba Vista has been a problem child. It overheats constantly (even on the cooling platform) and shuts down, is slow as a seven year itch when loading applications, has a problem with the windows explorer that I have not yet been able to identify as hardware- or software- related. It is one of the earlier Vistas on the market with the weak XP-aligned processors. It didn't get these problems until it was just outside of the 1 year warranty. lol
My advice is to buy from a major brand like HP, Sony, or Compaq, no matter what OS you are getting.
The only thing that concerns me about Vista is that the earlier processors were not strong enough to keep up with the demand of the operating system. It takes more processing to run Vista than any other OS.
I bought a Toshiba Vista.... Last year, for my first year of college.
There are many programs that aren't compatible with Vista (right now) so look
out for what you purchase for your computer, check its compatibility. I bought
virus software online, which said it was compatible with vista, but I have a 64-bit
vs a 32-bit & it would not work on my laptop. I was able to return the software
(purchased online) but they charged me $5.00 to cancel it.
I would say that the battery life is not the greatest compared to other laptops.
When I use my laptop, it's constantly staying on the charger. If I bring it to school
& try to use it there, it might last be about an hour or so if I run it on "power saver"
vs "balanced power" or "optimal use".. what ever the last one is called, it kills your
battery but your laptop will run faster.
Good luck with your buy.
I was thinking of turning to the darkside & purchasing a Macbook...
I hate how it runs, but love the aesthetics, & I heard the battery life is great,
my friend plays a lot of movies on there, unplugged.

I thought Windows 7 was a new release, how have you been using it for ages? I have had very little trouble with Vista Business and my new laptop has Vista and works just fine. The 1st thing I do is set it up as Windows Classic because I like the appearance better.
