05 HO 5.3L 50k mile smoke on startup
wow what a worthless heap of chevy crap this motor is.
mystyrious knock at idle, sounds like the thrust bearing is worn to hell, and when it sits for more than a day it pours a nice huge cloud of oil smoke on startup. gee im glad i took such good care of this truck synthetic oil since 3k miles changed whenever the dash yells at me, never beat on it. just poke around to work and haul my cars around, 50k miles the motor has about had it i guess. eats a quart of oil every 2000 miles...run great, rattles and smokes like my old 92 with 200k miles.
random venting, dont mind me.....
and no my engine doesnt have the bad early style of head that cracks around the bolt.
anyone else have anything bad to say about this aluminum block motor? or am i just cursed forever to get the one single junk vehicle out there all the time.

I have a 1990 ck and I have been driving it since the day it was new. Its got 248k on it and it has smoked as yours does on startup since it was new . I had the seals on the valveguides replaced when it was still under warranty and it cured the smoke only for a short time. So I have learned to live with it , that is where youre oil consumption is going aswell. As for the idle speed knock ,again you are not alone and I wouldnt sweat that either they all do it . I feel that this sound is from the valvetrain ,probably from a lifter. Hell it could be worse! You could be driving a ford or dodge!

i checked the endplay of the crank last night myself while i was changing the oil - .053" and the dealer said it was fine. so i know they didnt even check. this could get ugly. most of them "certified" techs dont know jack **** anyway. I like the truck, im just not at all impressed with the aluminum 5.3L. i wonder if i can just put in a 6.0 and 4L80 trans..
