Default 1988 K1500 Rear axle Differential major malfunction

Hello guys got this k1500 from a buddy few months ago. Beenworking on the basic maintenance and I got hit with severe break down. It snuckright up on me, for the last month I heard a high pitch noise but wasn’t verynoticeable, then all of a sudden the grinding started. The truck started makinga horrible metal grinding noise whenever I let off the gas.fficeffice" /><o></o>

Got under the truck an removed the shaft from the diff, theyoke had a lots of free play. Then I removed the diff cover. There was lots ofmetal shaving in the oil. <o></o>

Now I’m wondering if this diff/axle is a lost cause, or if Ican repair it right on a budget. I planon pulling the axle shafts an pulling out the diff on Saturday.<o></o>

Most of my auto experience is front wheel drive cars so I’ma bit lost, any advice would be much appreciated.<o></o>

To do it right is gonna take a lot of cash.

Cheapest way is to just roll another used rear end under it.... especially so, if you've never set up a set of gears before.

Thanks Allan, just saved me a bunch of time.

As far as replacing the rear axle is there any options apart from 1988 k1500 rear end? or are there others that bolt right up?
