Default 1994 Silverado 1500 Help!

My Dad has owned his '94 V8 Z71 for over 10 years now and its been well taken care of. It does have over 210,000 miles on it now, but it has been a reliable truck until the recent problem that his regular shop has been unable to diagnose. The problem originally started last fall by cutting out when he started his truck in the morning. It would sputter, jump, and sometimes die as he tried to get it going. Once he would get it out to the road and get some speed, it would even out and run mostly fine with just a sputter here or there. He took it to his regular mechanic and they tried several things: Changed spark plugs and wires, fuel filter, distributor and the rod, a valve on the carburetor (sorry don't know which one), they lowered the gas tank to check for a crimped fuel line, they did a pressure check on the fuel pump (they did not change the fuel pump that he is aware of). The last thing they wanted to try was a valve job because they thought a valve might be sticking. This was going to cost $1500 and Dad didn't want to spend that not knowing if that would fix the problem. The problem lately has seemed to come on a little stronger after the truck has been running for a while through the day. He will stop someplace for a while then when he tries to get it started again it will sputter and die. He was frustrated with it yesterday so he stomped on the accelerator and held it. It would surge and die back and surge and die back. It died three times before he could get it out of my driveway. He wants to keep the truck as a back up for sometime, but only if he can get it running reliably again. Does anyone have any further ideas as to what might be happening? Thanks for the help!

Did they test the injectors? My friends car did the same thing. It could also have a vacuum leak or the timing chain
