Default 1998 Silverado "Jumpy" fuel gauge

My truck has always had a shaky needle on the fuel gauge. But one day I was parked in my driveway and all of a sudden it started jumping all over the place. It doesn't give accurate readings now I'll turn it on and it will go to full then after like 15 mins slowly go to what I think I have in my tank. I put some engine cleaner in the tank last time I filled up but I don't think that caused this. Is there anything I can do or am I just going to have to live with it?

I recently had my fuel sensor go completly out, it would say i had an empty tank after i had filled it up just the day before. I took the tank off and got to investigating. After a while i found that the little "fingers" that ride on the sensor bar on the fuel float had worn and fallen off. This could be the case, which if they were long enough to only touch certain parts of the sensor, then this could possibly be the cause of the "jumping" you are experiencing.

Time for a new fuel pump or assembly. Only buy Delco or Delphi if you plan on keeping the truck. They are worth the extra money.

Well you just solved my issue and repairing what I own is way better than buying one of these new age hi tech plastic trucks and damn cheaper too
what the hey after 25 years why not R2 the tank and straps while getting my third fuel pump put in!
