Default 2008 Silverado G80 Rear Axle Fluid

I want to change the rear axle fluid along with the engine oil for the first change, just under 3,000 miles. There's a post on this forum that says that using anything but the GM fluid in the rear end is bad news https://chevroletforum.com/fb.asp?m=643 Is this true/still true? I'd like to switch to Mobil 1 but that is specifically recommended against.

I can't seem to find GM rear axle fluid anywhere online. Any thoughts? Thanks in advance.

why change differential oil at 3K? Itow with my 2500 series, had differential oil serviced at 60K when I had the transmission serviced.

All things back there are doing fine.

Better check warranty spec. something go wrong with a new truck and they will be looking for a reason to say it was your fault.

I always changed my own oil, but kept oil purchase tickets and never installed anything but AC oil filters until the warrenty was out.

Just my two cents.

Have had a GM service manager tell me to do that, said he had seenGMcar with blow engine, 25K miles and GMrepclose the hood and say no to warrantybecause it had other than a AC oil filter installed.

I feel changing the differntial fluid now is just a safe bet. So changing differential fluid voids the warranty from what you're saying? That sounds pretty shady. If GM is voiding warranties because the exact OEM equipment wasn't on there, and it wasn't a 10 cent AutoZone special, sounds like they are full of it.

Changing the differential fluid is like changing the engine oil, sure you don't need to do it as often, but it should be done. I got all the break in fluid out of the engine at 3,000 miles, truck said I had another 4,000 miles or so until I needed to change the oil. Sounds rediculous to me not to get any of the break in particles out.

Not sure what your problem might me...but according to the manual the rear axle grease does not need to be changed unless you do heavy towing. My dealer strongly disagrees and recommends that the rear axle grease be changed every 30,000 miles using only the GM synthetic lubricant and adds the friction additive for the limited slip differentials. Don't use any other synthetic rear axles greases...they will cause problems. The one that GM uses is made my Eaton...and is similar to the quality used in semis. Alot of people are trying to get away with using the cheaper Valvoline or Mobil 1 synthetic...a big mistake.
This guy is so far off the mark it aint even funny, GM trucks are not even available with a "limited-slip" rear end.

You can use any SAE 75W-90 Synthetic Axle Lubricant that meets GM Specification 9986115 which is basically API GL-5, Mobil-1 75W-90 is fine.

Thank you for your input, due to that, the dealer selling Mobil 1 in place of the GM lube, and the input from a mechanic on another forum, I have decided to go with the Mobil 1 which will be happening soon. Thank you.

I've read you need to ad the GM specific additive for the G80....is that true?
