Question chevy 3500 rear end swap

wanting to change the rear end in my 95 c3500 dually to lower gears for fuel economy and still have towing capabilities of hauling our 35 ft 5th wheel camper, have the 454 engine w/4spd od tranny,crew cab, see they had some 3500 straight trucks with a 3:73 gears?ops,i'm soory, left out what gears i have now, it's the 4:10 w/posi rear end presently

Do you mean higher gears like a 3:23 or 3:42?

yes, but was thinking 3:73 gears as still need pulling power

easist solution is to find a replacement axle with the desired ratio at a salavage yard. I did this to a 88 Scotsdale I use to own. Replacing the internals to change the gear ratio requires a new pinion and ring gear, crutch sleeve and knowing how to use a dial-indicator plus knowing how much backlash should be in when putting new pieces in.

what i was wandering, have new junk yard in area with decent prices so guess i'll keep a eye out for one there. thank you for the responese. mike
