Default Cylinder order 98 5.7 vortec

I have clicked so may websites now that my poor little mouse finger is throbbing. (boo hoo, right)

Truck was running like crap, so I changed the plugs a nd wire on my 98 Z71 today and it ran much better. But if I got into the pedal really heavy thewhole truck would begin to shudder and it finally through a SES light. Took it to the autozone and had them read the code......mutliple misfire. Next point of attack was the Distributor and rotor. Replaced them both and had a major misfireing thing going on. Thought itmight be crappy parts from Autozone, soI put the original cap and rotors back on andthe problem remained. Hmmmm....I may have switched a couple of wires at the distributor. So my question is, given that the distributor is labeled with cylinder numbers, how do I know which cylinder is number one vs number 8?

That's probably a rookie question, but i had to ask since I've scoured the net and found jack.

Very simple, when facing the motor the cylinder to your front driverside is number one then to you front passenger side is number 2.

8D 7 That is how it should look when facing it. and D is Distributor obviously.
6 5Hope that is what your asking.

1-8-4-3-6-5-7-2 is the firing order and if I remember right, it runs clock-wise around the distributor. Remember you need to have the ignition firing on cylinder number 1 so you know where to start counting on the cap, you understand what i'm saying?

Yeah your first response was the answer I was looking for. I had two of the wires crossed at the distributor. Either the 2 and 4, or the 4 and 6. As you can imagine, it ran like crap.It took me two real good looks at it tofind the problem. After I found the problem I went ahead and switch the distributor cap and rotor back to the new one aswell as changed the ignition coil. Fired right up and runs like a scalded dog now. Better than it has in the 8 years I've owned it, or it least it seems that way to me.I was beginning to getdiscouraged, so thanks for the info.
