I just had a reputable shop replace everything in the front end for $1800. It was downright dangerous before that. The remaining problem is extreme play. It travels one complete revolution before engaging. Also will not turn the wheels all the way to the left. I am going to try to figure out where the play is coming from by getting my son to turn the steering wheel while I watch from under the hood and under the truck. Could it be the gear box? I have some experience and have done all kinds of engine accesories including power steering pump. Is the steering gear box something that can be done by a novice in the yard? Any ideas on what the problem could be?
