Default Front cv axle out a few inches??

1989 4x4. Floor shifter. 4WD will not engage and light is not coming on. Fuse is good and front axle will not turn when in 4WD. I noticed the CV axle on passenger side looks to be out about 2 inches. Could this be causing my 4WD not to engage? Please reply if you can help me. Thanks.

Is the stub shaft pulled out of the differential extension housing 2"? Is this what you mean?

Yes, I believe so. I believe its refered to as the "pumpkin", the cv joint (axle) is out a few inches from it. I looked on the driver side and the CV joints boot is right up against the "pumpkin". I appreciate any help. Thanks.

I think this is all caused by a bad CV joint at the jackshaft.

"Fairly" easy to repair, but if you've never done this before, it can certainly be a bit overwhelming. I'd sure recommend that you get this truck to a good mechanic.

If i were you id have a shop put a new cv in i have a buddy that did his and when he was comparing the new one to the old one he realized he was missing the little meatal o ring that goes on the end of the cv that goes to inward to the truck and thought that, that was why the old one was bad turned out he pulled the old axle out that ring got pulled off and left in there and it ended up costing him a bunch of money to fix everything that was messed up from that little ring

Thanks. I stoped by a shop yesterday and talked to the owner. He is going to look at it Monday.
