Default Fuel pump HELP!!!

I need help!! I recently purchased an '03 Silverado 1500, 5.3 V8,4x4, Z-71. The fuel pump needs to be replaced and when I took it to the shop they told me that the fuel pump itself (no labor) would cost $465. When I look up the price going to Auto Zone and Advance Auto, the prices are around $249-$250. The auto shop it telling me that it needs to be a "deeper" or "longer" fuel pump than the ones I am being quoted when I shop around myself. But even when the vin is looked up "Z" it only brings up one certain type of fuel pumps in both places. Has anyone ever heard of this or am I getting screwed over by the repair shop?

I think they are messing with you. aftermarket ones you take a chance on longevity but they usually fit right up like stock...

My father is a mechanic and I am no dummy when it comes to certain mechanical work but I have never in my life heard of having to have a deeper fuel pump. Especially when the major part stores show the same thing. Thank you for the response

Realize one thing, shops are going to make money off parts they install. This sounds like a ploy to sell you a pump. I am NOT saying they are ripping you off, but giving you a line on the cost instead of telling you they make $ off parts the sell/install.

I realize that shops are out to make money but my only question is if anyone has ever heard about a deeper fuel pump as opposed to a normal one that apparently every auto parts store sells?

Only use an AcDelco or Delphi pump anything else should be considered junk. Most fail with in the first year. You can not buy a good pump at Advance or Auto Zone. The absolute correct pump can be identified by the RPO codes in the glove box. FYI at work we can buy most Delco or Delphi pumps for 250-280 and the have a list price (recommended price to customer) of around $450. With that being said their price is about right. I have no idea what they are talking about with a deeper pump.

Hint: One way to get the labor done for free, is to buy the part yourself, and find technical school in the area with an auto class. They'll do it for a grade, can't mess it up, the teacher is right there.
